Teaching Kids to Set Goals
I will be spending time teaching kids about goals. Today was our first lesson. A few weeks ago I sat down with each kid and talked with the kids about things that they do well and things that they would like to get better at. We will dig deeper by helping the kids set some goals for school. Goals have to be SMART. SMART stands for....
S - Specific
M - Measurable
A - Achievable
R - Relevant
T - Timely
An example of a SMART goal in Kindergarten might sounds like this....
"I want to be able to count to 100 by Christmas."
The date of Christmas might be too difficult for some kids and too easy for other kids. We want our goals to be challenging, but not impossible to reach. Sometimes, we may not reach a goal we desperately want to happen. Goals should take hard work and perseverance to accomplish.
Goals also require some sort of a plan. Over the next week I will meet with each student to set a goal and create a plan. I will make a copy of your child's goal and plan so that you can also see what they are working towards and support them along the way.
